چکیده

Organic wastes are extensively increasing with increased human populations, intensive agriculture and industrialization. The disposal of wastes has become important for a healthy quality of environment. In this regard recycling of utilizable organic wastes is feasible. The recycling of wastes through vermicomposting reduces problems of disposal of organic wastes. Vermicomposting, a novel technique of converting decomposable organic wastes into valuable vermicompost through earthworm activity is a faster and better process when compared with the conventional methods of composting. Within a very short period, a good quality compost rich in nutrient and vitamins is prepared, which is a highly efficient, cost effective and ecologically sound input for agriculture. The present study was carried out to find the changes in the levels of vitamins namely vitamin A, vitamin E and vitamin C present in fruit wastes during vermicomposting at different time intervals (15, 30 and 45 days) by Eudrilus eugeniae and Eiseniae fetida. The levels of vitamin A, E, and C were found to be higher in fruit wastes degraded by Eisenia fetida than Eudrilus eugeniae.

Nutrient changes and biodynamics of epigeic earthworms Eisenia fetida (Savigny) and Eudrilus eugeniae (Kinberg) during recycling of bagasse fly ash

Bioconversion of industrial wastes into nutrient rich product using earthworms is of double interest: on the one hand, a waste is converted into organic fertilizer for soil application and on the other, it controls accumulation of harmful waste that is a consequence of growing industrialization. This study reports the feasibility of utilization of vermicomposting technology for nutrient recover...

Vermicomposting of coal fly ash using epigeic and epi-endogeic earthworm species: nutrient dynamics and metal remediation

Huge amounts of coal fly ash (FA), produced during power generation, has led to several environmental problems associated with metal pollution and the burden of its disposal. Vermicomposting has emerged as a cost-effective technique in suitable management of FA. Two epigeic earthworm species: Eisenia fetida, and Eudrilus eugeniae and one epi-endogeic species: Lumbricus rubellus were selected fo...

Munnoli & Bhosle: Effect of Soil and Cow Dung Proportion on Vermi-composting

Use of earthworm species to biodegrade various substrates (industrial wastes, agricultural residues, etc.) for composting has proven to be successful after initial stabilization of vermi beds. This study presents optimization of vermi beds (soil + cowdung) for culturing of earthworms (Eisenia fetida, Eudrilus eugeniae, and Megascolex megascolex.). Optimum proportion of soil + cowdung (1:3) for ...

Vermicomposting of cow dung, kitchen waste and sewage sludge with bagasse using Eisenia fetida

The sugar cane industry produces significant amounts of cane trash and bagasse. Inappropriate disposal of agro-wastes can lead to environmental problems. Converting wastes such as cane trash and bagasse (Bg) to a fertilizer and conditioner is the aim of sustainable waste management in sugar cane industry. Cow dung (CD), kitchen waste (KW), and sewage sludge (SS) were mixed with bagasse as amend...
